Alaric wasn’t in the “Pilot," though he moved to Mystic Falls shortly thereafter as the seemingly unassuming history teacher.   

NOW: Alaric One Year Later

Alaric is a bad-ass vampire hunter who is training Elena to defend herself, though he's died several times. He also acts as a surrogate father for the Gilberts, ironic since, technically, he is Elena’s stepfather as his dead wife, Isobel, was her biological mother.
